Michigan’s Forest Green Delights With ‘In Waves’

Michigan’s Forest Green Delights With ‘In Waves’

Being a Michigan native myself, I have a soft spot when it comes to Michigan bands. That’s not to say I “take it easy on them” when doing reviews – it just means that I usually can’t pass up an opportunity to spread the word about up-and-coming music from the Mitten State. So when I was presented with the opportunity to review an album from a four-piece rock band out of Saginaw, it didn’t take much to convince me.

Forest Green has cultivated their own unique sound by taking roots with both a post-hardcore and alternative sound. Their tracks have such a unique blend that it’s almost like someone took 1 cup Yellowcard, 1/2 cup Senses Fail, and a dash of old-school Taking Back Sunday; the end result is a dish of that angst-ridden emo rock that so many of us remember from the early 2000’s, yet with that special something that still keeps the sound current for today. It just works.

The album itself, full of emotionally-driven sound and raw lyrical content that is reflective of this, is about everything in life being temporary. While some songs might be happier and more upbeat than others, the band never falters on delivery. And honestly, that’s also the way life itself works – some days are better than others. In this way, the album itself is right in line with the day-to-day workings of life itself. It’s an album based on honesty.

In Waves was released on July 3rd via No Sleep Records. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Mark Duhaime, drummer Nathan Urband, bassist Dan Horn, and Guitarist Chris Bloom.
